Preparations for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games have gathered momentum as Team Nigeria’s athletics contingent continues intensive training in Asaba.
The camping programme, currently underway at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, has brought together a mix of experienced athletes and emerging talents determined to make a strong statement on the international stage.
Leading the technical crew, Solomon Aliyu, head coach of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded in the opening phase of the training camp.
He emphasized that the federation remains focused on executing a structured programme designed to peak at the right time.
According to Aliyu, the camping exercise has been divided into three phases, with the team currently in the second week of the first phase.
He noted that attention is gradually shifting from general fitness drills to more specialised event training for sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers.
Morning sessions are devoted to endurance building and strength conditioning, while evening workouts concentrate on refining technique and sharpening speed.
The six-week first phase is aimed at building a strong foundation before the athletes proceed to competitive simulations and possible international exposure ahead of the Games.
Coaches in camp have commended the athletes for their dedication and discipline, describing the early response as encouraging.
They believe the initial weeks are crucial not only for physical conditioning but also for fostering unity within the squad.
The conducive weather and quality facilities in Asaba have further enhanced preparations.
Camp management has also prioritised nutrition, recovery routines and mental conditioning to ensure the athletes maintain peak performance levels.
While some invited athletes are yet to report, Aliyu explained that their absence is due to participation in the Niger Delta Games.
He assured that the full squad is expected to assemble once those commitments conclude.
Despite the incomplete roster, morale in camp remains high.
The coaching crew praised the standard of accommodation, feeding arrangements and overall training environment, noting there have been no complaints from athletes.
For younger competitors, the Commonwealth Games represent a platform to announce their arrival on the global stage, while seasoned athletes are eager to surpass past performances and reinforce Nigeria’s reputation in track and field.
With several weeks still left in the opening phase, officials are optimistic that the phased camping approach will leave Team Nigeria fully prepared to challenge for medals when the Games commence.
