The cancellation of the 2026 Finalissima between Argentina and Spain has sparked a strong reaction from the Argentine Football Association, which accuses European football authorities of unfairly blaming them for the decision.
UEFA explained in its statement that negotiations failed after Argentina rejected several proposals, including playing the match in Madrid. However, officials in Buenos Aires quickly denounced what they see as a misleading narrative designed to shift responsibility onto the South American champions.
The AFA and CONMEBOL insisted that their only demand was to play the Finalissima on neutral ground in order to preserve sporting fairness. In their joint statement, they argued that staging the match at the Santiago Bernabéu would have given Spain a clear advantage.
“Madrid cannot be considered neutral territory,” they stressed, adding that Argentina had accepted the idea of playing in Italy but proposed moving the date to March 31. The disagreement ultimately led to the cancellation of what was expected to be a highly anticipated clash between Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Lamine Yamal’s Spain.
