Olympique de Marseille have officially ended their collaboration with Roberto De Zerbi after a series of negative results, sealed by the humiliating 5-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in Le Classique. The Italian coach, appointed in the summer of 2024 with strong ambitions and a clearly defined playing philosophy, failed to stop a downward spiral that progressively weakened his position at the club.
The loss at the Parc des Princes acted as the final trigger in an already fragile context. Marseille struggled for consistency in Ligue 1, showed recurring defensive weaknesses, and exited the Champions League prematurely, notably after a disappointing showing against Club Brugge. Despite long-standing support from Pablo Longoria and Mehdi Benatia, De Zerbi no longer convinced the dressing room or the fans.
In an official statement released during the night, Olympique de Marseille confirmed the termination of De Zerbi’s contract by mutual agreement. Club officials felt that the cycle had come to an end and that the team needed a strong response to avoid a chaotic end to the season. While his tenure included a return to the Champions League and a league win against PSG at the Vélodrome, his project never achieved the expected stability.
OM set sights on Habib Beye
With De Zerbi gone, Marseille have already turned their attention to potential successors, and Habib Beye stands out as a leading option. Recently dismissed by Rennes, the former Senegal international attracts OM with his energy, leadership, and deep knowledge of French football. His modern approach, emphasis on collective discipline, and strong personality appeal to a club searching for an immediate reaction.
The Beye option gains traction within the Marseille hierarchy, especially given his stated desire to one day coach OM. In an urgent context, the club wants to move quickly to clarify the situation in the dressing room and restore momentum. Marseille could rely on an interim solution in the short term, but discussions around Habib Beye continue to intensify as OM look for stability and renewed ambition.
