Algeria divided over the demolition of Bologhine Stadium

The planned demolition of Bologhine Stadium in Algiers has triggered strong reactions across Algeria. Built in 1935 during the colonial period and later renamed Omar Hamadi Stadium in tribute to a key figure of the Algerian revolution, the venue hosted USM Alger and, at times, MC Alger after independence.

Closed to official competitions since 2022, the 9,000-seat stadium has suffered severe structural degradation, largely due to corrosion linked to its proximity to the sea. According to technical assessments, repeated renovation attempts failed to offer viable long-term solutions.

Faced with this situation, authorities intend to replace the stadium with a green park to address the shortage of public green spaces in the area, as reported by the national press.

However, the prospect of losing Bologhine Stadium has sparked widespread controversy among supporters and observers, who see it as the disappearance of a symbol deeply rooted in the sporting and cultural history of Algiers.
