Iran’s participation in the World Cup 2026 has taken a surprising turn after days of uncertainty. The country’s Sports Minister initially suggested that Iran would refuse to take part in the tournament because of the ongoing conflict with the United States and its allies.
The announcement created confusion within international football, especially since Iran had already secured qualification and was scheduled to face Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand in Group G.
However, the situation has evolved in recent days. Officials from the Asian Football Confederation confirmed that the Iranian federation has not formally withdrawn and still intends to participate in the tournament.
Iranian football authorities are now negotiating with FIFA to move their matches from the United States to Mexico, citing security concerns and visa difficulties. If an agreement is reached, Iran could still take part in the competition while avoiding playing on American soil.
