Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, have reportedly been victims of a suspected robbery at their training camp in Vienna, casting a shadow over preparations for their upcoming international friendly against Austria.
According to initial reports, several players and members of the technical team lost personal valuables, including cash and luxury watches, with the total value of stolen items estimated at around $20,000. The incident is said to have occurred at the team’s hotel, raising immediate concerns over security arrangements.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has since escalated the matter to local authorities, formally involving Austrian police to launch an investigation into the alleged theft. Officials are seeking clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly amid conflicting accounts from the hotel management.
In a surprising twist, the hotel has denied any evidence of a break-in, insisting that there were no signs of forced entry into the affected rooms. Management further disclosed that the facility’s CCTV surveillance system was not operational at the time of the alleged incident, a revelation that has intensified scrutiny and raised further questions.
Sources close to the team indicate that the situation has unsettled the camp, although efforts are being made to maintain focus ahead of the fixture. The Black Stars are expected to continue their preparations while awaiting the outcome of the police investigation.
The development adds an unexpected layer of tension to what was intended to be a routine international engagement, with both football authorities and security officials under pressure to establish the facts and ensure the safety of the team.
