Uganda’s Hoima stadium hit by setback for AFCON 2027

Hoima Stadium, recently inaugurated with much fanfare, has been ruled unsuitable by CAF for the 2027 AFCON.

Although the stadium is complete, the inspection report highlights major operational shortcomings.

These include poor segregation of traffic flows VIPs, media, and fans non-compliant locker rooms, and benches that obstruct the view from the stands.

Faced with this setback, the Ugandan government and the contractor Summa are now engaged in a race against time to meet CAF’s Category 4 requirements.

With a decisive new inspection scheduled for August 2026, the pressure is on to address issues with the press areas, technical infrastructure, and crowd management.

For now, the Hoima Stadium remains relegated to the status of a mere training ground, jeopardizing the national ambition to shine at the continental tournament.
