The president of the Congolese Football Federation, Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after a court in the Republic of the Congo found him guilty of multiple corruption-related offenses involving football funds.
The ruling, delivered in March 2026, concluded that Mayolas was responsible for laundering money and embezzling more than $1 million that had been allocated by FIFA for football development programs. Investigators revealed that part of the diverted funds had originally been earmarked to support women’s football initiatives in the country.
According to the court, Mayolas was also convicted of forgery, the use of falsified documents, and engaging in an illegal conflict of interest while serving as head of the federation. Prosecutors argued that the long-running scheme involved manipulating financial records and misdirecting development funds meant to improve the sport at grassroots level.
The case also implicated other senior officials within the federation. FECOFOOT’s Secretary General and Treasurer were both handed five-year prison sentences for their roles in the financial misconduct uncovered during the investigation.
Mayolas’ arrest sent shockwaves through Congolese football, raising serious concerns about governance and transparency within the federation. The life sentence marks one of the most severe judicial outcomes involving a football administrator in the region and could prompt further scrutiny of football funding and oversight across the country.
